Well I don't have anymore time to spend chasing it down. I need a functional distro for a final project at school.
Your giving up too soon. If you really want to go 64 bit then look at Slamd64 which has been developed using Slackware®. You should really consider fixing the problem as that would reinforce your project.

I come from academia and was involved with a lot of senior engineering projects. The documenting of the project will reflect what you attempt and succeed to complete the project. I don't know your schools project format but most require a project workbook or notebook for all tasks documentation. If this is for a college program that is accredited then it is a requirement to have said notebook(s).

Any way good luck with what ever you do.

I downloaded and installed BlueWhite64 with the same results. Not being willing to give in, I googled the problem. Turns out this is caused by a windows patch that shuts the nic off. So this happens when using this chipset and dual booting. I found the solution and detailed explanation on the Ubuntu forums
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=538448

I didn't want anyone to think I was ungrateful or unhelpful.

This is for a college project but the project involves setting up a website using Drupal not the OS it is residing on

Indeed; big thanks for that. I'd never heard of this one before, so it's good to know - filed it away for later reference

Can someone with the r8169 chipset comment if it was fixed in 2.6.24?

Point is moot with the OP, I guess, since he wants a 64-bit OS.

I'm having the same problem. Abit IP35 Pro motherboard, with dual Gigabit Realtek RTL8169/8110 integrated NICs. Slackware 12.1. Setup works fine in XP. I've tried setting windows to not turn off the nic in the device manager. I've tried pulling power for 30 seconds, and cold booting. Nothing works. Module r8169 is loaded, as shown in lsmod

I've tried DHCP, I've tried static config. Nothing works. Everything I've seen here looks like it should be working, but it just isn't. Does anyone have an idea? Or better yet, has anyone had slack working with this nic?

My home network config:
Router: 192.168.1.126
Subnet Mask:255.255.255.128

I'm not sure what my dns servers are, off the top of my head. My network is configured to static DHCP leases in my DDWRT router, so I never have had to mess with that. Since I cannot even ping the router, dns servers should not be part of this problem though, right?

so does `ethtool eth0` tell you you have a link? Does it give you any other clues with regard to auto-neg speeds etc?

I've used 8169 nics without problems in the past.

Oh and if you think it may still be the "Windows turning it off" thing you might try turning on the Lan Boot Rom in the BIOS, even if you aren't booting from the lan I've found it makes sure the nic is awake at boot time.

NICs are enabled for net boot. No difference. That was a good idea though. It seems like that should make sure it is turned on.
