RH 9 and mp3 files

I know that RH 9 doesn't support them. But I heard that there was a patch to use Xmms for mp3 play. Honestly, who wants an OS that won't play their mp3's?? It's nice, it's pretty, it's linux, but won't play a single one of my 15,000 songs?? That kinda sucks.

Is there a patch to use Xmms for mp3? If so, how could I set Xmms to be my default player? I asked this in another forum but didn't quite get an answer I could use. I'd like to click on an mp3 and have Xmms automatically start playing it, like Winamp does.

Check out the xmms mp3 plugin page HERE to get the rpm which will enable xmms to play mp3s.
When you've got it, log in as root and execute :-
rpm -Uvh <name of rpm file>

As for making mp3 files play automatically when clicked on, it depends on what desktop you use. You need to change the mime type application preference order for mp3.
I personally use KDE and for this you need to do the following :-

Bring up the control centre. Click on KDE Components -> File Associations
In the known types, select audio -> x-mp3
You should see in the application preference order the entry "Audio Player" which, by default in RH9, is xmms. Just move this to the top. If there isn't an entry there, just add one with the execute line being :-

xmms -e %F

That should do the trick.
GNOME should just be as easy.

In Nautilus, right-click on an MP3 file, and choose open with another application and fill in the blanks for xmms.

Of course, in konqueror, you can do the same thing by right clicking and selecting Open with ...

I've been looking around and found a great little MP3 util.

Look on google and search for 'mpg123', download and compile. It allows you to play MP3 from the command line and it can be used to play MP3 system sounds by selecting it as a player in sound server of KDE

mplayer comes along with the RH8 too.

This site has not been shut down... READ at the bottom of the page - that's where you enter the site. The "404 Error" is only the "cover page" telling you what MIGHT happen if EPA has its way...

I like the mpg123 file d/l. it doesn't give you the command to play the songs though

scobiej, your advise worked out great but....now XMMS wont play .ogg files at all.

Im fairly new to Linux so forgive me if I am simply overlooking the obvious.
