Nvidia/asus/XF86Config-4 nightmare

ok here goes.
For the last week i 've been trying to set up the NVidia driverz for my asus v9180 on mandrake 9.1. In the begining i tried some ready made rpms the .run and finally the tar.gzs.I had some problems with different versions of gcc used to compile stuff.
Anywayz i edited the XFConfig hundreds of times recompiled kernel and glx thousands and i dont want to think how many times i reinstalled mandrake.
Anywayz
Two weeks ago i didn't know a thing about linux and so i took the red pill. Now i am addicted.

anywayz
Lets get to the problem now.I am trying to run startx and i get an error message saying that no screens were found. My card supports two screens and i tried various options in the xfconfig but the result stays the same.
Am i wrong to think that i am close to gett it to work ?
Iz there anybody who could help ?

I am running mandrake 9.1, all I had to do to get my video card updated with the new drivers from nvidia was to boot in to console mode, and run the .run file. startx, change one line in the xf86config-4 file, and presto! Works like a charm. I have the Riva TNT2 64meg card. Suggestion would be to fresh install md 9.1 to get a generic driver to work. Once your up and running in x and everything works fine, download the ia32 tar gz file from nvidia. Untar, boot to console mode(run level 4), su to get roots power, change to the directory where untarred driver(.run) file is, run the script(sh NVIDIA-Linux-............run) and follow the onscreen questions. After script runs, type startx, edit config file by changing one line in the driver section. That did it for me.

unsure,

What 'source' is your kernel? I have the -10 kernel and cannot get the source to install the NVidia drivers. The only downloadable I can find is -21.

Thanks

userN,

Sorry about the name mixup.

Could you do "uname -a" without the quotes from a terminal screen and see what your kernel is (2.4.22-10 or -21). I'm just trying to figure out the source mixup on mine.

I am not able to install the nv drivers because I do not have the source files for my kernel (-10) and the only source files I can find online are -20.

Even though I paid for the 9.2 disks, I think I may try the Fedora Core 1 that I downloaded over the weekend.

Thanks,

Find That Source

..The kernel 'source' kommand is; unname --kernel-release: and I have [2.4.22-10mdk]
..I just begin recompile it before installing...("NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run")..
..other source,4 ur Os it's localized in a rpm directory ("kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm")..
..find it in a one of release - CD - (if you know what you're doing)
..check,and install it..!="D

For Driver Video: ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-4496
For Kernel Source: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i586.rpm.html

Thanks,

The RPM link is having trouble right now. I will get it later. I am a newbie with Linux. I have installed it several times over the years since Mandrake 6.0 but it never stuck.

I am going to try again.

Thanks again...
