SuSE 9.1 + Nvidia GF4 + TV-Out = Nightmare


Hi there!!!

I really need some help. I've got a Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 440 and nearly every distribution out there that I've tried was working just fine with TV Out and nvidia official drivers. However, things under SuSE 9.1 seems to be nastier or different.

I've installed nvidia drivers from both methods: Recommended by SuSE users (through YOU) and the classic one with the kernel sources. Both gave the same problem; - If I use "CRT,TV"". only the monitor works, if I use "TV" only, then only TV works and I need both (TV and Monitor) to work.

This is practically the same XF86Config that I've used with Debian, Slackware, Mandrake and Redhat and I did, got TV-Out without a problem and the same box works without a problem with WinXP + Nvidia, so I assure you that all cables are just fine (Thus, I can get TV Out to work with SuSE too, but not together with the monitor).

Everything is SuSE's 9.1 default here: Kernel and XFree.

Weird... I've found an older XF86Config file I had backup'ed from Slackware here. I renamed Suse's XF86Config to XF86Config.bak and copied my old Slack XF86Config to /etc/X11, and it now works... Now, where was those files significantly different? I can't see it? :P

The problem is twinview does not know how to activate TV when its giving a resolution of 1280 X 1024. This just a limit of the re-scanner or VGA to TV converter. You have tell twinview to not worry about display anything on the secondary screen at that resolution.

Change
Option "MetaModes" "1024x768,1024x768;800x600,800x600;640x480,640x480"
to
Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024,NULL;1024x768,1024x768;800x600,800x600;640x480,640x480"

The NULL just deactivates twinview for the desire resolution.


You may want to change
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT,TV"
to
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT, TV"

To activate TV out, all you do is hit CTL+ATL+ - or CTL+ATL+ +. I'm sure you know that already.

I thought PAL is 50 hertz because it refreshes 25 frames a second. NTSC is 60 hertz because it refreshes 30 frames per second.
