I've been using qmail for a little while now and am generally very impressed with it, nice bit of open source software. IMHO part of what makes open source software so good is the support and community that goes with it. I'd heard (from someone on this forum in a recent post) that the qmail mailing list isn't always that helpful/friendly. To be honest I thought that it was probably a slight exageration, or someone having a bad day. Until I asked a question myself

Subject: Rejecting mail for a user at a specific domain...
From: "Jamie Harris" <jamie@BlaBlaBla.Bla>
To: qmail@list.cr.yp.to
I'm sure there is a simple answer to this...
Say I have an MX that's primary domain is @primaryDomain.net, and it also
hosts a virtual domain, say @virtualDomain.net. Now @virtualDomain.net is
assigned to user bob. How can I allow email forbob@virtualDomain.net and
anything@virtualDomain.net (as per .qmail- files) through (hence gets
delivered to Bob's Maildir) but NOT allowe the use of
bob@primaryDomain.net ??
I did have a search of the arhives but couldn't see the answer,
hope I'm not making you answer the same question again!
cheers
Jamie...
Here's the o-so-helpful first response

Nope. Give us the complete, unedited output of `qmail-showctl`, and the real
user names, email addresses, and domains you're trying to deal with, and
restate your problem. Without the real info, no one can help you.
Read the document linked below in my .sig before posting.
Charles
To be fair to the qmail list and its members after this post I did get some good responses, and a solution was presented very quickly. There were also a number of people who felt (as I did!) that Charles' post was a bit 'off' to say the least. From the posts I've received on the qmail lists its clear that Charles has made large contributions to the qmail list, knows the software well and has answered many questions. Now this is a good thing, what I can't understand is how anyone would even be bother to respond with such a useless attitude-filled reply, which I don't feel their contributions to date excuse.
I'm just really glad that the LQ mods don't act like this; but if at anytime we do make you feel that you're getting this kind of attitude then I applogies in advance, please bring it to either the mods attention or Jeremy's.
(..)"what I can't understand is how anyone would even be bother to respond with such a useless attitude-filled reply, which I don't feel their contributions to date excuse.
Slightly OT, but have you actually tried to find out *why* he replied that way?
No idea, I recon he felt that I was wasting their time by not supplying the necessary info. In the guys sig was this page http://www.qcc.ca/~charlesc/writings...ist-bliss.html on how to post to the list which he told me to read... I think he must get stressed asking people for the necessary details to help him answer their questions.
I've recently had a mail from another guy on the list containing the following
FWIW, if I read his "bliss" page #2 right then yours surely was a "special case" since "(..) the knowledgable members of the list will generally ignore your question because of this." :-]

Not in the slightest. It was just the 'No' attitude of the initial response that I didn't feel was much use for a mailing list that supposed to provide support for the software.
Originally posted by Kurt Weber And that attitude you got most likely is due to the fact that you apparently didn't follow the customs of the QMail support list.
Which do not appear to include any sort of politeness.
The people you see on those mailing lists don't have to help you. If they want to request that you follow a few simple rules, that's entirely up to them. If you don't want to follow them, that's entirely up to you. Just don't expect them to help you.
