Expand ordinary 2.0 to Surround Sound [SOLVED]

Hullo there. I'm looking for a way to expand ordinary 2.0 sounds to use my Bass and surround speakers.

I'm thinking this could be a very useful topic for others, too, but my own hardware is an onboard intel8x0 7.1 chip - surround sound works on things like DVDs, but ordinary stereo apps sound on the front two speakers and nothing else.

Is there an app or an ALSA patch/setting that can help?

Cheers,
NL

heh, good luck! ...Getting ALSA to use a sub woofer is a pain in the neck.........I had no problems getting OSS to use my boston acoustics sub........and ALSA makes my Sub sound crappy at best, and Linus T. could care less about fixing the problem, and he made OSS obsolete in the first place.........

Well Linus isn't the only active developer out there - there must be some way.

How did you do it with yours? My bass is quite good when it's supported (in DVDs).

Well I know it's a way in the future, but I've just sorted it on my own. All is explained here:
