No sound+RealPlayer+Mozilla1.7.2+mandrake 10.1

I have Real Player Installed and can get it to load from a terminal or by clicking a link in Mozilla. I get video but no sound. I´ve looked in ¨aboutlugins¨ and the helix DNA plugin is installed (nphelix.so). I´ve run a sound check via System>configuration>kde>sound>soundsystem and am able to get a sound when I click on ¨test sound¨ (but nothing) when I click on ¨mime¨ . I am new to linux and gotten this far on luck, but I would appreciate help on getting this application working as it is great for the video/sound clips on BBC football.

Thanks in advance from another Mr Magoo on the Linux highway of life.

I fixed this - I am not quite sure how buy here is what I did.
Installed Kscd
Downloaded and installed Mplayer and its codecs.
Installed Bit Media Player.
Installed Amorek.
Installed Xmms.
My computer wouldn run Amorek or Xmms properly so I got rid of them.
Downloaded and Installed Grip.
Found our that I could play a CD through all the programmes left on my computer.
Ripped tracks from Grip.
Found out I could play the ripped files through any of the programmes left on my computer.
Still couldnt play the clips from the BBC -mmmm
Decided to have a poke around in the Mandrake Control Centre - in particular the sound card"driver which on my machine is 82801AA 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller.
Found out I could choose a diffrent sound card which was snd -intel8xo. so I did.
I was told I had to install ALSA so I did.
Rebooted the computer (because I am a refugee from windows)
Tested that I could play ripped files and CDś from all my programmes above - yes.
Went to the BBC sports page and clicked on the Audio/video links and then
Watched and Listened to Sam Allardyce bemoaning his sides performance against Blackburn Rovers!!!!
I think it might have been the sound card thingy.
Aaaah Magoo - youve done it again

Thanks for that. I tried to investiage my sound card and I got :-
'You don't seem to be running a kernel with modular sound enabled'.

I guess that is the problem. How do I fix is the next question.

My problem was fixed by a two step process which was:
1. select a different sound card in the Mandrake Control Centre (I don´t know if you have the same sort of option in Knoppix),
2. install Alsa http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO...TO.html#AEN109

I don know if this will work for you (especially if your using the Knoppix live CD).

Perhaps there is a linux guru out there who can help? How about it people? Good Luck

Well I can say for certain that it ain't quite that easy with Gentoo, I've got too work out how the hell I do all that manually (bugger).

But I'm currently "emerging" mplayer (have to search to see if the codecs are a different package), so I'll have to wait to see about running alsaconf.

My problem is a little different though, because I managed to get some of the "listen again" stuff working from the BBC site (Alex Lester from 3 till 6 in the morning, when I'm on a day off), by making sure that i'd put the nphelix.so and nphelix.xpt into the firefox plugins and components directories (didn't know if a symlink was enough so I copied them there instead).

The issue that I'm experiencing, is that when I want to listen to an album clip at amazon.co.uk to see if I want to buy a disc or not, I click on the link, and instead of opening it, it asks me if I want to save to disc, so I say yes, and just get a file called "hurl.exe" which is actually a text file and if I then put the link from the text file into realplayer to open I get some crappy error about it being an obsolete or unsupported codec - and to contact the site to complain.

I can't see amazon doing that, so it's got to be something I've not got set up/configured/installed and it's confusing the hell out of me!

Sorry bigjohn I havent got a clue how to help you but I did follow the links on your post which I found very useful - thank you. Visited your home page and thought that you might appreciate the humour in this article.
