file-roller is good (easy to use) if you already have gnome installed then it is worth installing. KDE has it's own archiver but I am not sure what it is called.
I tried to install it but my agnula-distro needs a lot of libraries to install ( I have no internet connection, just the agnula distro and the debian 3.0r2 cd1) file-roller and for the installation of other tools.
The only app i have been able to install was openoffice.
