how to unpack .tar?

hello,
I gzip(ed) -d a .tar.gz file. now i have a .tar file and do not know what to do with it.
I just want to unpack it to the same location.

I have not a clue. The --help is too difficult to me to understand

tar -xf <your_file_name.tar>

you can extract a gz file in one go by : tar -xzf <your_file_name.tar.gz>

You could also install a gui e.g file-roller.

cool, thank you. the command should be enough. Is file-roller good (I do not know, I am a Newbie to Linux)?

file-roller is good (easy to use) if you already have gnome installed then it is worth installing. KDE has it's own archiver but I am not sure what it is called.

I ll try it. I use gdm/fluxbox and have very few tools only.

I tried to install it but my agnula-distro needs a lot of libraries to install ( I have no internet connection, just the agnula distro and the debian 3.0r2 cd1) file-roller and for the installation of other tools.
The only app i have been able to install was openoffice.

The command works great.

I would also take a look at the tar(1) manpage. There are a large number of other options available for the choosing when you are using tar.

At a command prompt type man tar

That manual page is the most definitive description of all of the options that the tar command can do.
