Having Trouble with CD Sound

Hello All,
Been a long time since I posted, but I am having a issue with my sound. I am running Slack 9.1 and all of my system sounds are working without a problem, however I am unable to get any sounds from any cd's that I put in the drive. I have looked around and on google but the only thing that I have been able to find was some post that said to plug your cd-rom into your sound card.

My motherboard has on-board sound, and I am using a lite-on CD/RW drive. I have unmutted everything I can think of, and I can not get xmms or Kcd to play anything. I am not getting any errors, and I am able to burn cd's using K3b without a problem.

Any help would be great - Thanks!

Robert

I had a similar (maybe the same) problem. I uses Gnome, so I went into the volume control and found that my cd was like line 2. Just start playing a cd and start turning all of your volumes up full blast. Another option might be (in XMMS) go to your preferences and choose another output plugin. I know my computer gives me like three choices, but only one works.

ALSA Output Plugin 0.9.7

I just right click on XMMS and choose Preferences. You should see, near the bottom, a box named Output Plugin. It should have a couple of arrows next to it. Click on those and it will show you all of the available choices, in case you don't use ALSA.

Also, try doing it all as root. For me, when I first was getting things going, root had a lot more volume controls than everyone else. If this turns out to be the case for you, try "chmod 666 /dev/mixer*" and you will get more volume controls for your regular users.

Well, That is the plug-in that I have been using. I do have one question though. Under the configure dialogue box, what do you have set for your mixer device. At this point mine is set to PCM. I do not know if this is the problem, but I guess that it could be.

If you can listen your music if logged as root may be you have a problem of permissions with your cd player device.
Try including yourself as normal user into "disk" group editing the /etc/group file.
It is laso posssible you do that by Kuser, if you like more.
Ciao

I'm sorry, I don't know what configure dialogue box you mean. Let me know and I will tell you what my setting is.

Under Preferences in XMMS, when you go to your output plugin, you said that you were using the ALSA output plug-in, which is what I am using. When you click on configure, that is something at the bottom that says mixer settings. Mine says PCM

Doh, I see. Mine is also PCM. Are mp3s playing in XMMS? If so, then it isn't an XMMS issue. Let me know and I'll see what else I can come up with.

What are you using to check that all of your volumes are turned up? Try something like this:
Code:
shilo@slakbox:~$ su
Password:
root@slakbox:/home/shilo# alsamixer
Then, use your arrow keys to go through every single one to make sure that they are turned up all the way. Also, make sure the cd that you're trying to listen to is not mounted.

Have you checked that the volume controls available to you as root are the same as the volume controls available to you as a user? I know they weren't for me when I first installed.

Thank you very much - This was the deal...

When I was doing ym setting as a user, they were not been stored and I guess there was a conflict with the root settings and my user settings. So I di a su to root turned everything all the way up and then did a "alsactl store", and I am now hearing my cd player...

Thank you very much

*now to work on my scrool wheel on my mouse :-)

Scroll wheel is usually very easy. Open up xf86config (if your using xfree86, that is) in your favorite text editor. Look for a section that says something like this:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"

	# Identifier and driver

	    Identifier	"Mouse1"
	    Driver	"mouse"
	    Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
	    Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
	    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
That last line is probably missing in yours, so add it. Restart X (I'm no guru, I usually just reboot) and your mouse should work fine. Not only will the scroll wheel work, you can also push the scroll wheel down to work as a third button
