Weekly Hardware Poll, January 12th: How fast do you push data?

We're going back to a simple poll on what you currently have.

On your fastest machine, what's you hdparm like? SATA? ATA133? SCSI? Fibre
Channel?

hdparm -i /dev/hda

Will tell you, and the * is what mode its in right now. udma5 = ATA100, udma4=ATA66, you can probably figure out the rest... if you've got SATA, hdparm might not get its dma mode right, but don't worry, its most likely running at it.

Just one section for SCSI, no need to break down the scsi madness.

Cheers,

Finegan

Actually unless you move massive amounts of data, most people can't tell the difference between ata133, and sata.

Think of this: The data travels at the same rate up/down the cable, just like a single car going down a freeway, simply adding a few lanes doesn't boost the speed of said car. If you add many more cars, things get slow. By adding a few lanes you can make things faster, that's only if you send that many cars up the freeway though.

The difference for most is in the speed of the drive itself, RPM wise.

However, I run two drives of two different speeds, and two different ATA speeds. 100 and 133

EDIT: I need to learn to type

Two Maxtor 6Y060L0 ATA133 7200RPM drives running at ATA 100 because my mobo doesn't support ATA 133.
Next person I build a comp for gets this Asus P4PE, and I get a new one :} They'll get it cheap, it's 15 months old...

Wife and daughter's runs at ATA 133 - do I vote twice?

Edit: wake up...poll is closed :{

ATA66, ATA100, ATA133, and SATA does not effect hard drive performance. Hard drives rarely go at the controller's maximum throughput.

If you want to know I have an ATA66. It goes the same speed as my ATA100 controllers.
