invalid partition table

installed rhel 5.3 on dell r710 with md1000 as das.
after creating raid 0 + 1 and rebooting, received an error message below:
/dev/md0 does not have a valid partition table
/dev/md1 does not have a valid partition table

please advise

Did you actually create partitions or does your raid have partitions on it yet?

Can you perform the following two commands and see if they return anything meaningful.

sudo /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/md0
sudo /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/md1

if you are logged in as root you can ignore the "sudo /sbin/" parts to both commands.

the raids have partitions on them. i am going to try the commands and let you know what the results are.

fdisk -l /dev/md0

Can I check, how have you set these raids up, are they off of the raid controller that I am fairly certain dell R710s come with? I wouldn't expect the PERC raids to create their raids as md0 and md1, those look like software raids.

As it goes, your partition tables are empty or not valid as they are simply not displaying... are you booting this off of a different hard drive? if there is no data on them then you might have to create new partition tables with fdisk and format them with mkfs. However I assume these are just the raid 1s if so you may wish to follow a guide like this http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO-5.html using the md devices themselves as normal hard drives.

yes they are software raids. I created them with the disk druid tool when installing red hat 5.3 which requires that you create two software raids first then you can create the /dev/mdx and the mount point as the instructions below:

How do I go about creating a raid in rhel in text mode? how do i obtain the downloads too?
I do not want to go the LVM route.

Hmmm, The md1000 should also have the Perc raids that Dell use (generally made by LSI), I would consider configuring the entire raid with the perc raid cards to be honest, it will save you a lot of effort and configuration work in the long run. If the raid cards you have only support raid 1 or 0 you might need to make two raid 1s and software the raid 0 over them... depending on the type of perc raid cards that you have.

IME, the 'invalid partition table' msg can be ignored; don't know why it occurs, but it doesn't affect the operation.

i went into the unified server configuration and configured for raid-1. it would only let me configure for one of the raid percs. i applied this for 2 drives plus one as a spare.

what is the command for looking at the RAIDs in RHEL?
should i perform the raid before i install the os or afterwards?

what about the ability to see the DAS and its drives?

the reason why only two drives in raid configuration can be done because the perc-6e can not be configured in the utility.
i had no problem configuring the perc-6i with 2 drives and one spare.

r3sistance is right, you should not use Software RAID for this. To use an MD1000 you need to make sure it's connected to a PERC6/E PCIe Card.
(NOT a SAS 6/E Card, which is a very low end controller supporting raid 0 & 1 only)

Then you either use the PERC6/E Firmware interface (Ctrl+R during POST) to configure the array, or you have to install OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) into the server & configure the RAID over the web interface for OMSA.

Now I see your problem. At the moment the USC does not configure the PERC6/e. It will only configure the PERC6/i. To configure the PERC6/e, you still need to use the Ctrl+R RAID BIOS interface. Or you can always configure the PERC6/e later after the OS is installed by using OMSA.
