OS Icon

I was wondering what that little OS icon under each poster's name it a thread means. Sometimes they appear totally random!

I'm pretty sure, it's the forum getting information from UserAgent in your browser that shows the distro being used.

Howcome you say you are using Slackware but the icon is just "linux"?

I'm not real sure.... Some it works, others it does not. It may have something to do w/ being 64 bit version of firefox.. but I really don't know

The latest version of Slackware is apparently not in the list that jeremy uses, since it only shows linux and a pinguin. People that use Slackware 12 do have a Slackware icon instead of the pinguin. And yes, the forum gets the information from the useragent sent by the browser.

I'm posting this from Slackware 13 to and only shows the linux pinguin.

You can write about:config in the address bar, search for "general.useragent.extra.firefox" and change it to something like Slackware/Firefox/3.5.5

I typed about:config and found these probably relavent fields (This is the Firefox installation that came with Fedora 12):

general.useragent.extra.firefox Firefox/3.5.5
general.useragent.vendor        Fedora
general.useragent.vendorSub     3.5.5-1.fc12

I changed this line: general.useragent.extra.firefox Firefox/3.5.5

but

I didn't have this: general.useragent.vendor Fedora

either way, seems to work

Sometimes there is a " general.useragent.vendor " line
which must be changed too.

Anyone know of a way to do this in Opera? There is a thing for User Agent, but it's just a pull down menu and a field with a number in it.

I would go even further. In my Firefox:

general.useragent.extra.firefox;Firefox/3.0.17
general.useragent.locale;       en-US
general.useragent.vendor;       Linux Mint
general.useragent.vendorComment;Felicia
general.useragent.vendorSub;    6

Most Gecko based browsers use a similar configuration, so this would apply to Konquerer, Seamonkey and others as well.

I use a Firefox variant: Pale Moon. Since it would be wrong identifier to use
general.useragent.extra.firefox;Pale Moon" or maybe even
general.useragent.extra.firefox;PaleMoon) - dunno if a Whitespace there can be an issue...

Do you have more info about other Gecko based browsers. How is it done with Seamonkey?

http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ will tell you what your user agent string is sending.

I have an Opera extension called "User Agent Changer" that I use to make sure I send the correct information to LQ (I really don't care what I send anywhere else, though earlier today it mucked up on another computer and said "macos" when, in fact, I was using Mint).
