I'll need to know what xorg version you're using, what nvidia card, and what nvidia driver you're using. Also if you could add your xorg.conf file, that'd be great.
The failure can mean a few things. It could mean your composite extension isn't enabled in your xorg.conf, or your video driver is too old to support it. It also might be that your xorg is version is too low.
Well, since this post I've gotten past that, but now I'm getting a segmentation fault error, and then it crashes X all the way.
I was using http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Slackware to try and install it again, and now my startx is gone, I can't open emacs or anything required some sort of fonts, and I can't get out of console mode.
I really don't want to go back to my install discs and reinstall X, I will just go back to square 1. I am currently on Vista, so I can't access some of the info just this moment. I am using a geforce 7900GS, I think the file I use to install the nVidia module is NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run. I think right now what I'm trying to do is upgrade from xorg 6.9 to 7.1. I think anyway. I'm just trying my best to follow the how-to verbatim as best as I can

Re-installing X should help with any errors. I wouldn't use anything less than 7.2 on my setup. And if you have backed up your original xorg.conf file, try booting with it instead, just to see if you can get into X again.
Sam
PS
It may help to backup and remove any X settings and config files in your home directory, so X thinks it's running for the first time.

That's something I really should know. I am 85% certain it is x86, but I just got a new computer, w/ a Core 2 Duo, and I haven't checked to see what it is.
I reverted back to my old xorg.conf, something I'm meant to get onto a jumpdrive and post, I keep forgetting whenever I switch over to windows to copy it over, and I am at work right now, but I'm writing it on my hand to do it first thing when I get back home
Which folder exactly is it in the home folder? I can't seem to recall a folder like that. I tried reinstalling the old libraries, X system, and KDE system (folders K, X, and L?)
I'm at work right now, a little distracted, so theres a good chance that I forgot to answer something you just asked, even though I've read this about 3x.
In regard to what version of Xorg I'm using, I'm not sure anymore. I thought I reverted back to 6.9, but a person has told me that I'm sort of in limbo right now.
This is my most current Xorg.0.log file:

I just wish I could go back to 6.9, start over in square one, and try this all again, but it seems that I've jumbled a lot of stuff up.
Well, I would completely uninstall xorg first. You can work in console in the meantime to install a fresh xorg. Use slackware's package manager (if it has one; I don't use slackware) to completely uninstall your X server. Do a reboot into runlevel 3 (init 3) and install the X server version you want.
What I meant about the home directory (the ~ directory), just back up anything important to you, and restart X with an empty home directory.
As for the Core 2 Duo, I believe, from the Intel site, that it is a 64 bit processor. So you should be using the 64 bit nvidia drivers, and see if that helps at all.
As far as I was able to tell last time I compiled my kernel (2.6.20.4), I could only find two things relating to C2D/64-bit processing. I selected them both. Is there anything I need to do to make Linux as 64 bit as possible?
I see what you mean about backing up, definitely a must.
So I will download the Linux IA64 driver, and look into anything extra I need to change in my kernel.

There's not much that's necessary to do to optimize a kernel for your architecture (though admittedly I have never optimized a kernel for a 64 bit architecture before). Just select the right processor from the list, disable the generic x86 selection below, and disable SMP if you're not using it.
I came across a post discussing 64 bit distros. It seems that some distros support 64 better than others. Unfortunately, I didn't see slackware in the list.
If you want to give another distro a try, it might give you better support for your architecture than just a recompiled kernel would.
There's also mention of Slam64, which is based off of slackware, but it is unofficial.
