I suggest you do configure one before doing anything else.

Twofold: too high expectations and not reading up on how Bittorrent works.
Search for "bittorrent FAQ".

No Firewall or the appropriate holes in it (I agree with unSpawn that you should activate one) is not enough if you are behind a cable/DSL router. In your router setup, you need to forward ports 6880 through 6889 to the machine on your local LAN. Maybe that's your problem.

Talking

I suggest you to use ktorrent, setup a firewall and open the random port in firewall that ktorrent use it for in/out connections.
I was having these speed problems with azureus.

check KTorrent`s Options menu and see what port it uses, then, open that port in firewall (TCP and UDP)

It might not have anything to do with this, but I'll mention anyway. If your firewall rules etc. are all right and the speed is still slow, try downloading some file (maybe small Linux iso) that somebody can -- preferrably just before you try -- test and see how quickly the file should download. If you get similar speeds, it's ok, but if you still get low speeds it just might be that your ISP is slowing down torrent connections. That didn't sound sensible to me before I found out that my own ISP was doing something to slow down torrent download speeds; even those Linux isos that I'd usually rather download using torrent than ftp (for example) were loading as "fast" as 4-5kB/s..with a 10MB DSL connection. Nice, eh? The reason why they are doing it is "almost all of the torrent traffic is illegal". Well, if you ask me, they should get to the roots of it and not just blindly punish everybody, including those who don't download that illegal pirated porn stuff. But like I got to know, ISP is The Law, customers become second -- especially when that ISP is pretty much the only sensible choice at this appartment (funny, in movies this kind of setup is called "mafia" or a "cartel").

Well after all this I too recommend to check your firewalling settings, and then test the download speed with a file that is known to download well (in your area). Hopefully it's not your ISP, because for that you couldn't do anything.

hi...

i tried changing the port to 49500... & the d/ls are now moving at
25-30 Kb/s than 8-10 Kb/s...

This means that ports 6880-6889 are really blocked by my ISP..!!
On Win. i have port 48144 configured & d/ls move pretty fast!!

i agree with the throttling suspicion. i have bellsouth slow dsl. sometimes my azureus gets up to 12-15kbps, but never near the 25-27kbps on a file from rapidshare, megaupload, etc. bellsouth is upfront with the warning, which makes it the law, i guess.

you guys may be over complicateing the issue

All I needed was the same tcp and udp port forwarded through my router/firewall, and a public IP address. I have 3mb download and 256k upload, from charter. (yes i know that upload figure is sickening, but that's charter for ya)I've pulled nearly 2.3mb download. One key also is to limit your upload speed globally as well as your max connections or torrents will use up all your upload and bring even web browsing to a grinding halt. It doesn't matter which port you use as long as something else isn't using it. It is unlikely that an ISP would filter or throttle free range ports, this would cause more overhead on the routers then it's worth, however I have found that some ISPs issue private IPs to their residential customers there by killing any hope of speed with torrents. Unless it's a 1 to 1 nat, which would defeat the purpose. (saving money by not having to buy another range of publics)

Well, I didn't think changing the port number would work but lo and behold 2 downloads that were stuck for several days (one of them being the Time Machine from the 50s ) got unstuck and is now rolling along at 10k. Better than nothing.

a good example of isp throttling is going on right now. i'm at 2.7% of download and my share ratio on this folder is 2.8. immigration discouraged, but you're free to leave?
