is there any way to become root off the fedora6 live cd?

my installed version is not working (kernel panic) and I was going to see if I could fix things (fsck)? using the live cd that came with my book...however there was no option to set up a user apart from a regular user duging its bootup...is there a way to become root on this live cd? thanks in advance.

Simply open a terminal window and issue the command:

su - root

There is no password.

I type su - root

(su space dash space root)

It DOES prompt me for a password and when I hit enter it says password incorrect

hmm..unless I am missing something you just CAN'T become root...kind of a waste of a live cd if you ask me...unless of course I am doing something wrong which is quite possible.

Assuming that you selected an automatic install of Fedora which creates an LVM by default. If you did not use LVM then your root partition will be mounted at /mnt/sysimage. You should be able unmount and run fsck. Booting the 1st install CD into rescue mode will allow you root permissions.

I just confirmed - I booted the FC6 livecd, and there is no password set for root. What disk are you booting?

well its from my book the fedora 6 and red hat enterprise bible..has the linux dvd, a live install fed 6 cd and a extra's cd as well. perhaps it is because the cd is from a book not a download? during install it never prompts for a password for root just to set up an ordinary user. then it will not let me switch to root...honest abe...

thanks for the info...before I begin...do I actually need a cd? or can I do this off the dvd? also I guess this would be easiest if possible...is there any way to instruct fed6 to check all the file systems during bootup and fix any errors found? that way I could just enter a few commands and then reboot...sorry I know these are newbie questions but..well I am one...
