I currently have samba set up as a file server. It acts as a central location to store everything of mine. I would like to be able to share a dvd burner in the same way that I am currently sharing hard drive space. Is it possible to share a dvd burner on the samba server so that I can burn dvd's from other computers on my network? If it isn't possible with samba, is there another program that could do it?
It is possible to share the mount point of the dvd rom drive this way the contents of the dvd rom can be read and shared through samba. But there is no way to burn to the dvd rom through samba. To clarify issues to burn to a cd or dvd using Linux you have to create an iso using mkisofs and then burn it to the CD using cdrecord. So you would be better of searching for web interface for those utilities than focusing on samba.
I checked out webCDWriter and I thought I was getting somewhere but it only works for cd's. If I want DVD writing support, I would have to pay for the pro version and I don't want to do that.
I may set it up to work with my cd burner but I guess I'll just have to keep my DVD writer on my main machine and burn from there.
That sounds like it would work and would be pretty simple to do. My entire family must use the burner and they would have no idea what .iso or ssh are let alone be able to use them.
It's too bad webCDWriter Pro (which supports dvd burning) must be purchased. Thats the first linux program I've needed that must be payed for.
