Can't play dvd on free 2007

Can't play any moves or mpeg files using the free 2007
The 2007 seems to have changed to kmplayer and the older
player as in 10.2, is not listed in the rpm's.

It says mplayer not started when attempting to play a file or dvd.

I am using a 64 bit laptop. Is it a problem only on 64 bit, or on all free 2007?

Anyone have a solution?

This problem is almost always because you need the libdvdcss package. This is no longer included in most distos because of legal problems with regionalisation of DVD's.

Go to url: http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/

Right-click the second package libdvdcss2-1.1.9-1.i386.rpm and download it to somewhere on your hard drive. The find the downloaded file, right-click and select "Install Software". The YUM installer will run and sort it out for you. It will tell you if it needs any dependencies. Mostly I've found it finds them itself.

Once it's installed you should find DVD's will play.

I use now Kaffeine for all my multi-media. Though Xine also does a good job.

I've found that MPlayer does the best plug-in for Firefox. It even plays the video's on CNN.

Yum won't work for mandriva though. Best thing if you're new is to go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ , select your system, and pick the categories you want to add to your urpmi database. Probably all of them except the ones marked 'backport'. Then when you want to install something, go into the control centre to find the install software part. Or simply open up a console, sign in as root user (type 'su') and then type:

urpmi libdvdcss

or whatever software you want to install.

Lightbulb Alternative for Mandriva Using Firefox

I found this thread very helpful. Thanks! (My DVD is playing now. Yeah.)

I discovered a shortcut for Mandriva 2007 users:

Using Firefox, I installed libdvdcss2 by clicking on the link
and doing the following:

When the popup box came up (What should Firefox do with this file?), I selected Open With Software Installer. The file installed immediately.
