internet slow - 1kbps with mandriva 2006 on dialup

Hi folks,
This has had me bugged for some time now. Ever since I upgraded to mandy 2006 I've not had a dialup speed better than about 1 kbps. This is using Konqueror, I can't connect fast enough to download any other browser!
What I have tried so far.....
1)Manually entering my ISP's nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf
2)turning off ipv6 in /etc/modprobe.conf
3)from Mandriva errata page, added "NETWORKING_IPV6 = NO" to /etc/sysconfig/network
4)disabled any firewall
5)checked security level is set to standard i.e. level 2
6) made sure that my modem max speed is set to 115kbps

With mandriva 10.1 on the same machine I used to get excellent average dialup speeds. Unfortunately 10.1 crashed absolutely fatally and I did a complete reformat and install of 2006 as the cure .... some cure eh?? I'd be super grateful for any wise words!
Cheers.

Please could you list what modem you have and what driver you are using?

Are you using a Linuxant driver by any chance?

Hi Michael,
Thanks for your reply, I'm using an external modem connected to the serial port so there are no horrible winmodem or driver problems. The manufacturer is Sitecom, model DC003 and it's configured on /dev/ttys0 as ppp0

Also I should add that I had the same problem with my (beloved!) Hayes accura until it got zapped by lightening a few weeks ago. Just to reiterate all was fine with this arrangement on 10.1......

Are you dual booting? Can you test to see what speed your modem is on Windows?

This would help to see if the problem relates to the driver (although it the manufacturer says it is fully plug n play compatible in linux) or whether there might be a problem with the hardware or the ISP.

If it is a problem with the configuration I'm not particularly sure what is causing it. Have you tried setting the max speed control to 56k? Is the flow control set to hardware?

The other thing you could try, is attempting to remove any configuration files for the modem relating to Mandriva 10.1 and reconfiguring it under 2006 in case the format of the configuration files has changed and it is confusing the OS?

Not really sure though.

Maybe someone else could help?

Are you absolutely sure that the modem is only configured on /dev/ttys0? I have a hard modem which I had configured on /dev/ttys0 and /dev/ttys3 which gave similar results as what you are seeing.
