Firefox and kprinter (now fixed!)

I have read all threads on this forum on kprinter and firefox. Seems other people are having problems.

I have

1)Removed all other printer entries from userprefs.js
2)Changed all printer "command" entries to kprinter --stdin
3)Added "print.postscript.cups.enabled" and set it to false (this makes no difference other than adding the entry from the cups server for my printer)
4)Changed "print.printer_list" to kprinter

When i hit file->print I get a dialog box and I select any of the printers:
CUPS/hp7960
default/postscript
default/kprinter

with cups.enabled= false

The default/postscript takes less time than default/kprinter

with cups.enabled= true

The CUPS/hp7960 entry does print seemingly correctly, but doesnt show any kprinter dialogue.

Edit: I found out that if I make the print command:

kprinter; echo "kprinter should be started";

then kprinter segfaults with or without the switch:

sh: line 1: 10797 Segmentation fault kprinter --stdin
kprinter should be started
sh: line 1: 10799 Segmentation fault kprinter
kprinter should be started

I will try upgrading firefox to 1.5.0.6

I've been a unix admin for far too many years, and I'm
having problems with the current linux printing philosophy.
so,no wonder a newbie is stumped.
I was running linux (slackware 3.5) ages ago and had no problems with the printing subsystem. I've just installed
Slack 10.2 and most things work from the start, even my
Hoontech DSP 24 soundcard, but the printing (especially cups)
is the most obscure system I've seen in a long while.
E.G: The is no flowchart type setup instructions. My cups
system responds with errors, time after time.
Simple questions don't get answered.
1. Setting up the cups daemon
2. Setting up the lpd daemon.
3. Prerequistes for printing subsystem.
4. URI building, for say for example, to a usb port.
5. Things to watch out for, common mistakes.

So, I really don't think that firefox is the culprit here.

Is anybody listening? There seem to be an awful lot of cups
posts here.

tia folks,
ged.

Hi and thanks for replying!

I would like to say that I am not exactly a newbie, although I may be a new member of this forum. I have been using SuSE Linux for 3 years now but never had this problem until now.

The printer seems to be setup okay in CUPs (the web interface) and an entry appears in Yast when I run the hp-setup tool. The hp-tools also talk to the printer okay.If I try and set it up using the yast "autodetected" printer, it screws up (wrong URI as you mentioned, so it doesnt talk to hp tools properly).

It seemed to work *before*, but before what I cannot say. Strangely kprinter works fine in konqueror. I think it is possible to pass pages to konqueror to print with a firefox extension, this is a major hack, but it might work.

For now, I can print, without the kprinter dialogue, I change the settings via the cups web UI first...

...the problem seems to also occur with thunderbird.

Just to say, I now fixed this, I had to change a file

/home/$user/.kde/share/config/kdeprintrc

Part of the file was like this:

[CUPS]
Host=localhost
InstallDir=
Login=george
Port=631
SavePassword=true

Should be like this:

[CUPS]
Host=localhost
InstallDir=
Login=
Port=631
SavePassword=false

Result: kprinter works with firefox
