apt-get failure - maybe proxy problem

Hello all,

Recently switched to Debian after years of using Slackware and Gentoo.
I used to live in a student house where I had to use a http proxy to access the net. At installation time, I set all this up, and it worked like a charm. I got my own place now, and I access the internet through a gateway now. All net apps such as firefox, thunderbird, gaim work after clearing the proxy settings I used before, but apt and synaptic bitch out and I can't figure out why. Useful info:

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I can however, use firefox to surf and find these addresses without problems.

[Alpha]-(root)-(/etc/apt/sources.list.d)$cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
APT::Authentication::TrustCDROM "true";
Acquire::http::Proxy "http://s4106538:******@proxy.uq.edu.au:3128";
Acquire::::Proxy "false";

Does anybody understand what is going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Igs

Try removing the Aquire lines for the proxies from the apt.conf as you say they are no longer required no need for them in the file.

I had a similar problem to this, and the solution for me was to modify /etc/apt/apt.conf

I just removed the HTTP from the line
Code:
Acquire::HTTP::Proxy "false";
and made it
Code:
Acquire::Proxy "false";
That worked great for me
