I Got slackware 10.2 installed and using KDE. I'm trying to install Firefox 1.5.0.1. Idownloaded the tarball, What directery do i exctract it to to update? Plus what directery do i exctract other tarballs toinstall programs?
When there's no installation package you just have to untar the file wherever you want and then you run the executable. This happens with Firefox as well. I was wondering the same before some weeks
You can also replace the old links of Firefox with the news but I don't know how you can change when you type "firefox" in the console to run the new one.
You can install pre-built Slackware packages (ones you get from www.linuxpackages.net, for example) with
# installpkg filename.tgz
from within the directory in which they're located. For source packages, see this. Note that not all packages that come in .tar.gz are source (Firefox isn't) and you can get source packages ending in .tgz (and those aren't pre-built Slackware packages!) or .tar.bz2.
Just to expand on what has been said, if you have a Slack package installed which you want to upgrade, download it to a directory of your choice (gftp is fine (use binary mode)). Then open a console, cd to your download dir, and
upgradepkg oldpackagename%newpackagename
in your case the package is mozilla-firefox-1.5.0.1-i686-1.tgz
In which case you can use the Slackware Firefox SlackBuild with the non US English binaries to produce a package for your language (I've used Pat's SlackBuild with the en-GB binaries and they work fine without any modification).
Distribution: Slackware, and of course the super delux uber knoppix universal live recovery cd

zyphix it seems everyone went their own direction with your question. I just updated to firefox 1.5.0.1, so here is how i did it.
tar -zxvf 'filename.tar.gz'
su root
rm -rf /usr/lib/firefox
then move your extracted directory to where the old one was.
mv firefox /usr/lib/firefox
make sure you name the directory the same as the first one, otherwise none of your links will work.
on a side note, i've noticed lots of bugs with firefox 1.5.0.1. must of them have to do with macromedia flash, and it seems to be dislike waiting on dns servers. Meaning you will have to hit "try again" a bunch

Thank you for that information.
My method is simply to download the EN-GB version of the app and install it in /~/bin each time it's updated.
