Removing Firefox 1.0.6 and installing Firefox 1.5

So I just installed Slackware 10.2 on my laptop and see that it only has Firefox 1.0.6.

I want to install Firefox 1.5, but I only want to use installpkg and removepkg, because I still haven't decided on a package manager yet (I use Swarte on my PC and haven't had any problems, but there are a lack of packages).

So, my question is, what is the best way to do this?

Do I go into /var/log/packages and removepkg firefox?

Once this is done, where do I put the .tgz file for the new version of Firefox and where do I run installpkg?

The easiest way is to run pkgtool (as root user) and it'll give you a nice menu that has a remove package option.

try calling pkgtool from the directory the tgz is in and select current from the menu. If that doesn't find the tgz file select other from pkgtools menu and type in the directory path.

The location of the package itself does not matter. You can call installpkg from anywhere in the system and you will get the same result.

After the install, you can delete the tgz as well, all the information about the package will have been moved to /var/log/packages when you installed it.

You could have also just done a "upgradepkg firefox-version-arch-subversion.tgz" as root and it would have uninstalled the old version and install the new version automatically.

Ya, I though about that. AFTER I had to install by hand. For some reason pkgtool wouldn't install, and so once I installed by hand, it was giving me GTK errors.

This morning, Firefox starts up ok, so I have no idea what happened between yesterday and today...

Isn't pkgtools installed when you install Slackware?

Yes pkgtools is there, but when I went into the directory to install the .tgz file, it couldn't see the .tgz file.

I have no idea why, so I had to install by hand.

What do you mean by couldn't see? You were in the directory but the file wasn't there?

chello everyone. I just did the very same thing. Fresh install, uninstall old Firefox, and Mozilla using pkgtool
then downloaded the new firefox 1.5 package. Only thing is theres no Slackware package. I just untar'd and placed it in /usr/local, then made a shortcut fro it on desktop. works fine.

ldconfig might have resolved some dependancies when you rebooted that solved the GTK issues.

Only thing is theres no Slackware package.
