video editing and dvd authoring

What do you people use for that ? I've tried kino and mainactor and qdvdauthor and it all seems either very immature or very expensive.... What do you guys use that you'd recommend ?

Don't know if I'm helping but I have been thinking about this too.
Have you checked out Cinelerra? I don't think it's free but it's what Broadcast2000 turned into, and I think you should be able to turn up a copy of that -- e.g. Broadcast2000 came with my Suse 9.1.
(I think Broadcast2000 is what FilmGimp turned into.)

It's pretty serious software, but recommended power for Cinelerra is dual Opteron and/or some spare CPU power to make a renderfarm.
I have not had a chance to try out Broadcast2000. I am wondering whether I can get around the rendering muscle problem by only working on short pieces.

As far as I can make out there is nothing (open source) that gets near the standard of, e.g., Final Cut.

I have not tried MainActor since upgrading my system, but previously it was quite crashy.

I use avidemux2 for my video-editing and dvdstyler for dvd creation.

I find that avidemux is more then able to handle all my video transcoding/editing needs and even is very good at putting video into proper DVD ready mpeg format.

DVDstyler also does a very good job. I find that once I got used to the interface (the docs at least on my distro were a little sparse). it is both capable and user friendly. the only possible complaint I would have about it is it doesn't (yet?) support VCD on DVD which I was using in my qdvdauthor days to fit more on a dvd.

Just a few days ago I encountered this for the first time myself, I managed to master 2 sweet dvd's with menu's and all, only thing I could not get was menu music, but that is ok, I used mplayer to convert the video's, and I used qdvdauthor to generate menu's and dvd structure, then growisofs to burn it to disc, it was fristrating at first, but the more I read the directions and just hacked at it the more it worked.

Thanks, it helps very much. I am reanimating my xp partition to try a few windows packages and the amount of anti-virus running, spy ware busting and windows updates (and associated reboots) is getting me down so I hope I can use linux tools.

The steps (if I understand well) is to get correctly encoded video files, generate menus and then create a dvd image is that correct ?
