Install Java runtime plugin

I am running FC3 and the latest version of Firefox. I was at a site with a live web cam, http://www.annapolis.org/paca.htm, and found that I needed a certain plugin in order to view the cam. I was directed to the plugin and I downloaded it and followed the instructions to install it and everything seemed fine. I then had to create a symbolic link from my plugin folder in Firefox to the plugin itself as described here:

Mozilla 1.2, Netscape 6 and later 1. Go to the plugins sub-directory under the Netscape directory cd <Mozilla1.2>/plugins 2. Create a symbolic link to the ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so file: ln -s <JRE>/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so Example: * If Netscape is installed at this directory: /usr/lib/Mozilla1.2/ * And if the JRE is installed at this directory: /usr/java/jre1.5.0 * Then type at the terminal to go to the browser plug-in directory: cd /usr/lib/Mozilla1.2/plugins * Enter the following command to create a symbolic link to the Java Plug-in for the Mozilla browser. ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29 /libjavaplugin_oji.so . 3. Start Mozilla browser or restart it if it is already running. Note that if you have other Mozilla components (ie: Messenger, Composer, etc) running, you will need to restart them as well. 4. Go to Edit > Preferences. Under Advanced category > Select Enable Java

When I create this symolic link Firefox will not start, nothing happens. If the delete the link it starts up just fine, recreate the link and it won't start again. Any ideas as to what is happening? Thanks.

As far as I remember, there're two "libjavaplugin_oji.so" inside "/usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/". Try either linking the other one instead and use full paths too when linking:

ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/whatever/libjavaplugin_oji.so /home/user/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

if that still won't work, you most likely have a broken version of Java. For some reason, Java breaks a hell lot when downloading. Download it again

You need to install the plugin from /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so and not /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so.
