windows 7: hp officejet 4500 network printer

hi. i have this printer connected to my linksys router and i am able to print from my fedora machine after yum install hplip.

i am trying to set this up on my wifes win-7 laptop. i go to start -> devices and printers -> add a device.
and after a few moments it finds the printer on my network (hpf732bo-hp officejet 4500 g510g-m).

i click next and i get a page saying that the device has been successfully installed but after a few minutes a pop-up comes up saying that the install failed:

wsd print device     (green check mark) ready to use
wsd print device     (red x)            no driver found

when i try to print using notepad the new printer isnt available as an option.


when i go to the hp site to manually install the driver, it installs all the hp bloatware but at the end it tells me to connect the usb cable to finish the install. what is the way to connect this as a network (wifi) printer in windows ?

It's been a while since I installed my networked HP printer on my girlfriend's Win7 computer, but I think you need to tell the HP Driver Program you are installing a networked printer near the beginning of the process.

I find it makes things easier all-around to give the printer a static ip address.

Then you can pass the address directly to the install routine at the appropriate step in the install program. ("Specify a printer by address" in the picture at the link.)

I've had experiences in both Linux and Windows in which the networked printer would not be "discovered," but could be installed by address.

My printer is wired, not wireless, but I can't for the life of me see how that would make a difference to the router.

Lately I've only had to configure brother printers with the same result so not sure how much of this information will transfer. I configured the printer with a static IP address via the web setup page and the windows driver had the option to use a IP address vs automatically find. It is also possible to configure a network printer using IPP in windows. Since the device is already working no need to connect it via USB. The brother software also had a similar option.

i tried installing the driver again and at no place does it ask me about ip address. it only cares to show me animations about how to set up the paper feed tray.

so far, it is easier for my wife to email me the documents to print out on my desktop. still not sure why the install worked on my desktop connected to lan but not the laptop connected to wifi.



my opinion is that the hp software + the windows way of installing stuff (cd-rom/download ... mouse-clik ... bloatware ...) hinders more than helps and leaves you with a non-uniform procedure.

what version of win7 is this
if it is " Windows 7 Ultimate " or "Windows 7 Business " you should not have any problems

If you look at the link I posted, in the screencap towards the bottom, one of the choices is "Specify a printer by address."

Select that.

Then, when you click next, the setup program will ask you to enter the address.

I have successfully used the HP Windows install program to set up my networked, static IP address, Officejet Pro L7680 printer on Windows XP and twice on Windows 7 Professional.

it came from a laptop bought at a department store. its probably windows home edition.

(other instructions/forums mention that the install requires you to type in the ip-address of the printer but it never showed me that step).

it might be " Win 7 Home Basic"
is the sticker still on the bottom of the laptop

the laptop might be looking for a "Windows Shared" ( homegroup shared on a windows OS network ) printer and not a everyday wireless network printer
