Video driver not loading during normal boot of OpenSUSE 13.1

Hello all. (Brand-new OpenSUSE user here.)

I've just installed OpenSUSE 13.1 on an older Dell PowerEdge 840 and all is well except that with the normal boot, an off-color splash screen of the lizard/vine appears and then the screen goes black and the computer goes into power-saving mode. I then have to re-boot.

If I press escape during the boot (or boot in recovery mode), it boots properly. The messages scrolling by all have green "OK" labels.

I strongly suspect the issue is the video driver (for ATI on this system).

I have tried the instructions here: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Radeon -- and the test "gears" program does run correctly, although the terminal gives the following error: "libGL error: failed to load driver: radeon".

Dell's support pages (http://downloads-us.dell.com/Pages/D...840.html#Video) list a recommended video driver for OpenSUSE at the bottom of the page.

So should I use this driver instead of what's listed on the OpenSUSE pages? (And how would this be installed? If I extract and double-click on the driver file, I get a dialog box offering to install the package with YaST -- but that gets this error: "The following packages have not been found on the medium:
XFree86-sles9u3_radeon_dell_server")

Thanks for any suggestions!

The driver they recommend is for SLES, not openSuse. I would recommend to just use the proprietary driver, if possible. Which videocard is built into that machine? If you don't know, the output of
Code:
lspci
will tell.

The ES1000 is a very old chip (introduced 2005) and most likely not supported anymore by the proprietary drivers, so the free radeon drivers are the only option. Those are usually preinstalled on any modern distro.
After starting the system, please provide the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log here. PLease use code-tags (see my signature) to post that information.

If I am reading the lspci output correctly, it's an ATI ES1000 video card.

The page http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:AMD_video_cards lists that card in the "Supported hardware open source radeon driver" section of the page. So I'm wondering if that 'open source radeon driver' is what is discussed on the page http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Radeon -- which appears to be installed, but not loading.

Thanks again!

As it seems from the content of the logfile, this device does not support hardware 3D rendering, it falls back to software rendering, which can be the reason for glxgear failing. Wouldn't be surprising, since this device was specifically designed for servers, where 3D simply is not needed.

To solve your booting problem, you can try to specify the resolution/refresh rate to use (a wrong resolution or refresh rate is the most common problem when the monitor turns into standby) at the kernel command line, using the parameter
Code:
video=1024x768@60
This will tell the driver to use a resolution of 1024x768 with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Add that line to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT option in /etc/default/grub and run the command
Code:
update-grub
to apply the change.

Thanks. I have edited the configuration file, but when I enter "update-grub" in the terminal, I get this error:

Code:
linux-24fz:~ # update-grub
If 'update-grub' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
    cnf update-grub
Is that the correct command?

It works on Debian. I assumed that it would be the same on openSuse, but I don't have an openSuse system to test.

Thanks again, TobiSGD.

Here's the solution to the update-grub issue (credit to wolfi323 at the OpenSUSE forums):

On openSUSE you would need to run "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grug2/grub.cfg", there should even be a comment at the top of /etc/default/grub that tells you this.
Or use YaST->System->Boot Loader->Boot Loader Options to change it, you can even select the graphics mode there without having to type in "video=1024x768@60" manually.

According to your description, plymouth (the boot splash) could be causing your problem though. You can disable it by adding "plymouth.enable=0" to the "Optional Kernel Parameter" line (see above).
Or just uninstall the package "plymouth" and all the dependencies.

(For me, just running "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grug2/grub.cfg" after editing the grub configuration file to use the video-specification worked -- but it's good to know about the ability to disable plymouth if needed.)
