Help with LimeWire/Java please.

Please help. I am a newbie but here is my problem. I am using Mandrkae 8.2 and KDE 3.0.1 My friend who uses linux tells me, hey, you should use LimeWire. I d/l Lime wire, but I need Java. I d/l Java and follow the instructions and I get that it was installed succesfully. The problem is when I go to install LimeWire I get:

What am I doing wrong. Please help.

you have to type this to tell limewire where is your javavm
PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/your_java_directory/bin"

I think it's the right syntax
if you want it to start every boot add it to .profile in your /home
(if .profile does not exist, create it)

You need to put JAVA in your PATH. Follow this how to.

I had the same problem, this was the fix I needed, and I am sure it will be yours too.

well firsdtly ignore your firends advice and let me tell you to do something else...

1) tell your friend he's dumb
2) don't use limewire... you're finding out why right now...
3) use a native client like http://gtk-gnutella.sf.net gnut, qtella or something similar

Just to let you know, I use gtk-gnutella. I took your advice and now I am running it on my system, but along side limewire. I use GTK for movies, and LimeWire for music. I like the way GTK works, but I don't like the vague UI. Not too bad, but could use a few search improvements.

Acid, is gtk-gnutella really better than LimeWire? Well Starting java is not so hard (but it's true that you need a nice box to run 65864 process of the same stupid java vm) but it run very nice if you know how to use it

Do you have a web page showing me why I should switch to gtk-gnutella?

back to java problem, I know next acid's reply would be why would you need 40Mb java on your machine? but anyway, first you should get rid off kaffe if it's installed on your machine, do
rpm -qa|grep kaffe
if it returns anything then as root do
rpm -e kaffe
next step you need to adjust your $PATH as described above (the PATH env variable can be set in different places, the best bet is /et/profile file, before the export PATH and other env vars statement
append PATH=$PATH:/dir/where/java/installed/bin
and then relogin to make things stick permanently and without further hassle.

OK, here's the thing, I'm not sure what you mean. I know I have to type it but where. Do I need to be in the Java dir? at what point do I put the above line in? I thank you for your help but I'm not sure how it goes. I need you to be a little more specific.

Just for more info, my java dir is /usr/java folder and the limewire bin file is in /home/darkghost/Apps file.

I think you just type that at the console(xterm, eterm, rxvt..etc)

it's not the gtk-gnutella is better than limewire... it's that limewire is so much worse than all the other gnutella clients, cos it's sooooooo slow and rubbish cos it's in java. And then the newbies all go get frustrated with linux as they can't get limewire to run, and because limewire runs on windows too that's the only one they know exists... gtk-blah is cool, and fast, and extremely easy to use. unlike a similar cropss-platform client...

but as usual it seems my advice is being ignored....

OMG. Acid you were sooooooooooooooooooooooooo right it's silly. I think people (newbies especially) super user frielndly programs. And while gtk-gnutella isn't super friendly, it's not bad at all. It's like a non-graffic version. Fine by me because it works. OH YEAH!! Scre LimeWire and your java installing crap that you don't come with. gtk-gnutella is the way to go. In fact, I even learned how to compile. Woo Hoo.

not graphical? well it certainly is, it's just written in a better Graphical Toolkit. GTK is so much nicer looking than the other main ones, although the swing api is nicer, as it's java...). i've always thought Both QT and Swing (god, especially Swing [java]) are so clunky and somehow insulting. but then again not a touch on all that XPants gunk. see... now if you want a non graphical version of gnutella, you coudl always try a genuinely non GUI program, like gnut, which is just a bleak console prompt. It is kinda interesting you describing gtk-gnutella as a non graphic program. Although technically you're pretty wrong :P i do know what you mean, and it does kinda show a considerable erm... (twatty phrase alert) paradigm shift in what people expectations are. You may be interested to now that gtk-gnutella is acutally a visual clone of gnutella, the original win9x program, which looked very very very similar, and actually worked better than limewire imho! you can of course always chaneg your gtk theme easily enough to change the way gtk-gnutella looks anyway...
