Kernel 2.6.11 Internet Browsing is Slow !!!

I compile the new vanilla kernel with Kernel pre-empt option and my internet browsing is now very slow.

When i reboot back into my old Mandrake kernel 2.6.8 the Internet is back to its normal speed. I have tried diff dns servers, browsers (mozilla, firefox and koqueror) and the speed is the same. It's obviously a kernel issue. I also notice it takes a good 2 minutes to load udev and sound modules on new kernel. The performance diff between the 2 is negligible but I want to be a hipster and use the latest kernel, no pre-packaged dross for me.

I used the same config file for the 2.6.8 kernel, could the pre-empt options really slow the net down that much ? Its supposed to make it faster.

It might be a problem with IPv6 ,which causes slow down in DNS queries

To disable IPV6

echo "alias net-pf-10 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

reboot

or re-kompile kernel without ipv6 altogether

good effort guys, I have been having the same problem and I did just as you said, it works fine!
Do you guys know (briefly) what this IPV6 does then? Should I realy be turning it off?
I'll have a look around to see if I can find out in the meantime.

IP v6 is Internet Protocol version 6. It is the new version of Internet protocol v4. It is responsible for data transmission between network "nodes", eg between your computer and server A, and between server A and server B.

If it's really slowing your computer down, and you don't need it, then disable it. Only thing I'd be worried about is when it becomes commonly used.

Another big thank you. Worked perfectly the first time. I would have never found the problem. /etc/modprobe.conf existed, so I just added the line and rebooted.

Mandriva 10.1, Kernel is 2.6.8.1.12mdk. Dual boot with Win XP using LILO.

When I try to do this I get permission denied .What do I have to ddo before this , I tried sudo but no luck

to edit this file you need to be superuser, so bring up a terminal, and type "su" then enter your root (administrator) password, now if you do the above echo command your modprobe.conf file should be amended.

view it and check by using cat /etc/modprobe.conf
