Required Assistance in Mandriva

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this forum, and this is my first post. And it would be my first time intalling linux. I don't know much about linux, hence I'm a newbie and would like some help.

I have recently downloaded a distrubtion of mandriva from linuxiso.org

I installed it into my computer and now I would to connect it to the internet. But the problem is, I can't seem to get it to work.

Could someone please guide me through the steps required for me to be connected online?

The last time I used Mandriva (Mandrake) was in 2001. I don't remember how I did it then. Try to use configure it with kppp. If I remember it Mandriva has Mandriva Control Center which you can use to configure your modem. Both COntrol Center and kppp should be available to you thru' the Start menu.

It would help a lot to know how you connect.

Dialup
  • is it an internal or external modem?

DSL/Cable
  • is it a USB or ethernet modem?
  • are you connected through a router or local network?

We don't read minds here, need to be way more specific.

Sorry, I am behind a router and what Im trying to do is get the linksys router to assign an ip address to the mandriva. Im on a cable connection.

The cable connection connects to my linksys wireless router and my mandriva will be connected to the router via wired connection.

P.S I am new to linux so please don't use technical linux word on me because I won't understand. I am a window user, but always had an interest in learning linux but haven't got the time, since now I have 3 weeks of spare time I would want to do something productive and try to gain more knowledge.

The Mandriva Control Centre lays it out for you so I would use that. In gnome, you may have an icon on the top bar/panel. Otherwise, you'll find a command in the menu under System >Configuration >Configure your computer [kde terms - gnome will be similar]. You will need to enter the root password.

It has a gui. Click on "Network and Internet", then "Set up a new network interface". Then, from what you say, select "Cable connection".

I have an idea that happened on my system without any particular action on my part (but don't quote me). Perhaps you need to configure the router? Which, regrettably, requires you to read the manual.

Another thing you can do while using Mandriva Control Centre is click on "Security" > "Set up a personal firewall ...." If you are connecting to the internet as an ordinary user, all services should be de-selected.

Connect linux pc to your router with an ethernet cable.
Become root. Issue the following commands in a terminal:
ifdown eth0 NB - That's a "ethzero", not an "ethoh"
dhclient eth0
Your router should assign your linux PC an IP address on your LAN, and tell linux that it is the nameserver, then you should be up & running.

Sorry, but I know nothing about wireless.

HTH
