I have no problem surfing internet.
I have a cable modem which connect to a Linksys router and then to my Linux PC. I heard that some expert in this forum say traceroute is using UDP by default. So is there any way that I can set it to TCP by default?
But for xtraceroute, how do I make it work ? is there anything that I can set to make it work?? currently I can see is only the globe and it always give me no response.
for starters you need to be root to run either of those IIRC, and second off with your linksys router do you have it configured for blackice? IIRC the blackice firewall that can be ran inside the linksys router will cause some issues with pings and tracerts etc...
Here is my situation:
- I am using a Sony laptop running redhat 9.0
- I connect wirelessly to a Linksys router
- which is in turn connected to my adsl modem
I can ping fine, and I can do traceroute via command line. But when i put in the right IP in Xtraceroute it takes a very long time and I get no response:

I have read Lleb_KCir's answer but do not undrestand. Could you give me a bit more information as how to solve this issue?
the Linksys routers have the ability to use BLACKICE as part of their firewall. this is a 3rd party software based firewall that normally runs on a windows OS
go there to read up more on that software. if you have blackice enabled in your linksys router it is possible that the software is blocking your traceroute requests. not saying that is the answere, but it is a possibility.
when you run xtracert in your RH box, are you being prompted for the root access? you should be, IIRC you need root level access to do that type of action. been a while since i ran the tracert inside the GUI on my RH9 box. nice tool btw.
