Upgrading to Mozilla 1.5 in RH 9

I'd like to upgrade to Mozilla 1.5 from 1.2.1 which comes with RH 9. I've downloaded the Linux release, but the installation instructions tell me to uninstall any prior versions of Mozilla before installing 1.5. I'm hesitant to proceed because Mozilla 1.2.1 seems to be integrated into RH 9 and the browser app is not located in the default location recommended by Mozilla (/usr/local/mozilla).

The release that I downloaded is the "general" Linux release that you get if you just select download. However, in digging further I found that there is also a "RPM for Red Hat 9 with xft and gtk2." I believe that the version that I downloaded is the "x86 full installer." I'm not enough of a techie to know the difference - or which one I need. Does the RPM allow me to upgrade with out risking terminally screwing up my system? Any advice would be appreciated.

Mozilla is kind of funny when it comes to upgrading. For some reason it doesn't support upgrading (overwriting an older version). Therefore, you need to either delete your current version or just name the old version something else.

You should be able to just download the x86 full installer and it should work fine.

I run both the default Mozilla and the 1.5 version on the same machine. The old one is installed via rpm and 1.5 is installed from source. I have seen no adverse effects from their coexistance. And RPM upgrade will replace the old default version. Where did you find an RPM of 1.5?

Pcghost:

The RPMS is at www.mozilla.org/releases/ Scroll down to Mozilla 1.5 then to Linux.

Wow, it normally takes them longer to release RPM versions. I find compiling it from source results in a more stable browser.

I just did the RPM install from the link given above. It seems to be working well. I like the RPM install because it changes the old version to the new one. When you install from source it has both versions running. Then you have bookmarks and plugins in two seperate locations.
