first what redhat 6.1 ??
there are two by slightly different names
the VERY OLD and very dead RedHat 6.1 ( RH 6.1) from Oct. 1999
-- the name changed with rh9 to RHEL3 --

or the just old Redhat Enterprise Linux 6.1 ( RHEL 6.1 )

mind you the current version of the 6 series is RHEL 6.4

you get it from the redhat site , that is if it is the current RHEL 6.4
you buy the required support license
-- single desktop $ 299/year
-- server install $399 to over $8600 per year

or
use one of the FREE rebuilds
CentOS 6.4 or ScientificLinux 6.4

I got mine from here:

http://rhnproxy1.uvm.edu/pub/redhat/

but you need subscription to get the update, I initially used RHEL, then I use Centos only, if you insist using RHEL, make sure you know how to setup repo list, also make sure you know how to turn off the constant bugging to register at RHN,
On your RHEL server, login as root, and open the following conf files
1)
/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/subscription-manager.conf
change from 1 to 0
2). /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/product-id.conf
change from 1 to 0

If you end up using Centos, one of the best repo is the rpmforge, which is here:

Follow the instructions here:
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalRes...ories/RPMForge

Generally, you shouldn't need rpmforge.
Start with the Centos repos (== RHEL), then, if you have requirements for something that isn't there, have a look at the EPEL repos.
If you need to add EPEL (or any other repos), first install/setup plugin-priorities http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities or you could break your system.

as per above

RPMForge dose not play nice

Now it is WAY better in el6 than in el5
in el5 ( RHEL5 ) you used rpmforge and THAT WAS IT you did not even use the RHN-update
you ONLY used rpmforge)

in 6 it is better ,BUT use caution !!!!
