setting resource limits for jobs...

Hi,
I have a RedHat machine with small memory (512MB).
I usually submit computational jobs that are
memory intensive. When I submit a job that pushes
the memory usage to close to 512MB, the system
slows down considerably. It becomes slow to even
do simple things like vi. I want to control two things:

1) Memory usage of a job:
I know I probably need to use ulimit
for setting this, but I don't know
which memory option to use from
the following.
--------------------------------------------
bash-2.05b$ ulimit -a
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
stack size (kbytes, -s) unlimited
virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
--------------------------------------------
2) %CPU usage of a job:
I want to set a limit on percentage of CPU
time in user mode for a job, so that if that job
is capable of consuming 100% CPU power, it doesn't
slow down a second job I might submit.
Thanks in advance,
Pointfielder

Memory usage of a job is usually controlled by the application and not by the system, at least as far as I know.

As for CPU usage, I guess you can 'renice' the pid of the application so that you put a very low priority on it.

Hope that helps a bit.
