RH8 kernel problems.

I have been trying to install a module for a USB adsl modem on RH8 and it needs the kernel source files. The ouput is below.

[root /usr/src/speedtouch]# ls
configure install speedbundle-1.0 speedcrc.h speedtouch.c
copying Makefile speedcrc.c SpeedTouch

[root /usr/src/speedtouch]# ./configure
: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
[root /usr/src/speedtouch]# make
awk: cmd. line:2: fatal: cannot open file `/lib/modules/2.4.20-28.8/build/include/linux/version.h
' for reading (No such file or directory)
make -C /lib/modules/2.4.20-28.8/build SUBDIRS=/usr/src/speedtouch modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/include/linux'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/include/linux'
make: *** [speedtch.o] Error 2

I have installed the kernel binaries which worked fine but when I try to install the kernel source files it says loaded to 100% and then I cannot find where they are. Im unsure sure if its actually installed and exists on my sysem at all. I cannot run 'make menuconfig' or anything like that either.

I have lots of kernel header files in : /usr/include/linux
My /usr/src/linux soft link points to /usr/include/linux for what its worth and I have created a /usr/src/linux-2.4.20.8 dir as Im unsure if the rpm file will create the dir it needs or not.
Should all the header & source files be in the same place?
I have no idea where the source files are though. Could someone please explain where they will be and how I can find them and where I should put them?

I thought *.rpm's were supposed to be easy.
I've tried using *.tar files and after lots of messing about with the pgp keys they run and appear to install but again I cannot find the files and neither can my modem module.

I've read the walk through on here and kernel.org but am nonethewiser.

The files should be in /usr/src directory followed by a linux directory or linux-2.6.x directory. Switch to that directory (linux or linux-2.6.x) and there do a make xconfig or make gconfig, but remember, that older kernels don't have the gconfig make.

Hope this shows you a way.
