RedHat 9 and Kernel 2.24.22 problem

I there,

I am new to linux so bare with me if this problem has already been solved and I am doing something wrong.

I have an Optiplex GX270 which comes with an IDE drive and 2 120GB SATA drives. I installed readhat 9.0 downloaded from their website. The installation worked fine as long as I do not use an AGP graphic card. The GX27- has a built-in graphic card. I then realized that 2.24.20 does not support the SATA drives, which is the reason for which I did not see the 2 extra drives. I went to the kernel website and downloaded the latest stable version 2.4.22 which supports SATA. after having compiled, installed and updated of the grub, I am unable to properly boot with this new version. The boot starts correctly, the 2 SATA drives are recognized and I then get the following error:
>>>>
FAT: bogus logical sector size 64543
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k nsl_iso8859-1, errno=2
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:00
>>>>>

If I boot on the Readhat Standard kernel 2.4.20-8 everything is fine.

Note that I compiled the new kernel with the default installed compilers from the RedHat distrib.

I am at a loss and would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Eric

Well I have moved a bit further. Apparently the default config for the Kernel 2.4.22 did not include RAM disk. Selecting this and the initrd option allows to mount the disk.

The new problem arise when trying to attach the SATA drives hde and hdg

After mounting the IDE disk the boot freeze at
hde: attached ide-disk driver

Any idea?

Thanks
Eric

yep same problem

I'm on SuSe with 2 Seagate Barracuda SATA Harddrives and it will freeze at hde: attached ide disk driver... I can't figure out if it is the harddrives or if it is my ide controller on my ASUS p4c800-e motherboard...
