You said you only have ssh access? Does the server have a BMC? iLo, Drac etc. Redirect serial out to the Virtual Serial Port linking the BMC and server. You can then ssh to the BMC and view everything as if you were sitting at a console. Also remove "rhgb quiet" from the kernel boot parameter if you haven't already. /etc/grub/grub.conf
Red Hat has some nice articles on the VSP thing. Step by step even for the Dell/HP side.
In /etc/grub.conf - should I just delete both words rhgb and quiet from the end of each line?
Im concerned that server wont boot if I do it wrong?
Also, scheduled to reboot at 6am tomorrow am. So I wont be there. Will this change lead to increased logging in /var/log/messages?
that kind of activity cannot be logged, because it runs "outside" of the os. The mem-test and other things mentioned can only be seen on the console. Probably you can try to attach a remote console....
Sorry for the delay. That's correct, remove "rhgb quiet". With this change, when the server boots you won't have a splash image (Red Hat logo). Instead you'll see a little more about what's happening during boot. It won't cause any issues or slow anything down. This output will bedirected to the serial port(console) like the a normal boot. You'll have to either watch the screen or redirect the serial output. Unfortunately syslog is not the first process started during boot so none of this will be saved in var/log/messages. Did you say this was a physical or virt server?
I should mention you can search rhgb quiet on access.redhat.com and find RH official explanation on this if you need documentation in order to make changes to the server.
BUT, I wont get authorisation to install this on a live server unfortunately. Is there any way to check whats going on without installing additional tools?
Get Red Hat support involved...they can DEFINITELY assist you. But by any chance...is this RHEL running on an IBM Power system??? IBM servers are NOTORIOUS for taking a huge amount of time to reboot....about a gazillion self checks, and it is NOT unusual for one to sit there for an hour, before the boot process even starts.
