Question Reading USB storage device?

Hello again, I have an USB storage device from Creative Labs(NORMAD-the one that is a MP3 player too) My system recognizes the device but, I don't know how to access the data or put data in it. Another question, I use RH8 and I have never downloaded any updates. I want to connect to the Internet, what are the updates I need and where do I get them?

Thanks,

I don't know what NORMAD is, but dmesg should tell you the name by which your system refers to the device. For example, in the case of my usb floppy drive, it's sda. To access the data on my floppy, I just mount /dev/sda onto the root filesystem. I can do that by either typing "mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/somewhere" everytime, or, even better, by creating an appropriate entry in my fstab.

Arrow Usb storage device

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. Do I have to mount the drive every time? Where does it show? can I see the files using GUI?

Thanks

Yes, it has to be mounted everytime you want to use it, the same way that you have to mount your hard disk partitions in order to access their files. Since it's a usb device, it won't always be connected to your computer at startup, so telling fstab to mount it automatically is probably not a good idea. You'll just have to mount it with the mount command. Once it's mounted, you can use whatever gui you like to navigate through its filesystem. For example, if you mounted it at /mnt/normad, you'd be able to view its files by starting up your gui and changing to the /mnt/normad directory.

ok, I did some googling. looks like the thing you're referring to is the Nomad, which is an mp3 player. I don't know anything about mp3 players, and whether they can be accessed like any other filesystem (I assume they can). But I found some things you might be interested it. Just type the following into google: creative labs nomad linux
It looks like there's already Linux-specific software for the thing. Good luck!

Also, since your question did not relate to RedHat directly, I think it would have been better to post it in another forum, such as Linux-Hardware or Linux-General. If you had done that, your question would probably have been answered by now.
