I have a retired windows box that I am trying to install RHEL4 on but having problems with the keyboard and mouse (using the PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports). It is a dual xeon setup with a Tyan S2668AN motherboard, bios version 1.01 (more on that later).
When installing RHEL4 everything was perfect. In the graphical installer the keyboard and mouse worked perfect. When using the keyboard in the bios config or choosing an item from grub, it also works fine.
When the system boots, however, the keyboard and mouse stop responding (in graphical login). Actually ... typing a key will make the mouse jump around sometimes. If I switch to another login terminal (non-graphical), I get weird messages when typing about mouse things being ignored.
I know this sounds like the inputs are reversed but I assure you they are not. As I said, the installer worked fine and I didn't touch the inputs after that.
A couple more notes:
o the xorg.conf file looks identical to other RHEL4 systems I've setup with PS/2 keyboards and mice
o plugging in a USB keyboard and mouse works fine
o I'm sure there are bios updates and I thought I would give that a try
o I don't remember using a PS/2 keyboard and mouse when windows was installed, so not sure if it was problematic then or not
o I've completely reinstalled RHEL4 and it didn't make a difference
I'd like to eventually run this behind a PS/2 based KVM but at this point the KVM doesn't make a difference, it fails in the same way behind a KVM or not.
I know this is a strange problem but I'd appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions.
it happend with me once, I just used another Keyboard and Mouse unfortunetly
And even though it worked fine at the installer thats becoz the Installer uses the general driver modules at install time, to make sure of this, at install identify that u use a 3-Botton Mouse, and try to scroll the description at the left shall it work ? No it will not.
n3m: I have tried a couple different keyboards and mice and it didn't make a difference.
gzoubek: Nope, standard x86-32 (I mentioned xeon, pretty sure those aren't 64-bit, but not positive)
So I flashed the bios, went from v1.01 to v1.05 and it seemed to fix everything perfectly. Sorry for the post before the bios update, but I really didn't think it would work.
