Promise SX6000 for NAS.
Hi, new to the site. Decided to finally register after seeing this site come up stacks of time in my Google.com adventures.
I have a 5RU Server with 1.8TB of Disk Space. It's basically six 300Gb IDE Drives on a Promise SX6000 (SCSI-ATA) Controller. Running Redhat 8.0. Install was sweet, no problems.
I've been playing with it for a week now. I am rsyncing user /home directory's from about 10 Rack mount servers scattered over the country.
I am hoping someone may have something simmilar or at least have an opinion on Redhat RAID.
--- Question:
Would you:
1. Stripe the disks as JBOD (One Filesystem, lot's of Partitions)
2. Create each 300Gb disk as it's own partition.
I don't really want Raid because this is purely a backup server. Rsync during the night... send it via scsi to the tape library during the day. Very simple, nothing ciritcal here.
The reason I ask is that I'm new to JBOD and I had one of the disks temporarily fail today (Red light and all) During this time I lost random contact with the OS... ie: input/output error when running the command 'find' ! Whether this was the disk failing or the Promise controller is yet to be determined.
Thanks in Advance.
