Problems with setting up Samba on RH9

I have had to re-install RH9 after an unpleasant experiance wityh Mandrake 9.2.
I thought things might go alright with RH9 but no such luck.
Despite setting Samba to be installed I cant get it to work at all. In fact I dont think its installed as when I type smbd -V in termainal there is no response. Clicking on Samba Server from server settings menu brings up nothing at all, no Gui, nothing. I tried re-istalling from the discs and it says it installed but it isnt. I tried downloading Samba upgarding to Samba 2.8 using Synaptic but even though it says its installed I cant find any sign of it. I tried downloading Samba 3 from samba.org, but when I try and folow the install deirections contained within its Packages-RedHat folder I receive installed errors.

Please can someone offer a solution, Im a releative newbie I'm afraid and am getting wearing of all the problems I'm having with Linux.

please do : rpm -qa |grep -i samba

see if you have samba-server installed... (Not just the client..)
