php-mysql dependancy problem after nitemare mysql upgrade. RHEL4

Ok guys.
I could really do with some Linux experince on this one please as I'm a fairly recent convert
Ive got a Cent OS 4.2 box and its a dedicated web server. Ok, I had installed I forget mysql 4.1.16 ?? i think and anyway the daemon was unstable and would only sometimes stop and restart correctly.
My ISP said I would need to upgrade mysql as there was a bug??! (hey thanks for that..its a dedicated self managed via ssh server by the way)

Anyway, I updgraded to the latest 4 xx mysql and this did not sort the problem..still the same bug acknowledged by mysql's bugs archive.

I then upgraded to the latest stable version 5.17 (latest one forRHEL 4) anyway...I had to do it via rpm and I downloaded and installed the source rpm..

So mysql now works but I cannot connect to PHPmyadmin...my site is blank (all php mysql) and its a nightmare

The massage im getting si that mysql socket cannot be connected too ?? ok. I realsied this is because php - mysql was uninstalled before I put mysql 5 on.. so I went to re install it..no problems right!! wrong....

I tried yum to install php-mysql and it says cannot as there is a dependancy on mysql.4.016 or whatever the one I uninstalled was!

So I did rpmfind php-mysql and it forcibly installed the old v4 version of this AND mysql on to the server (as it realised the dependancy issue)....

This is VERY BAD and now all of mysql is broken again and my head is swimming

Please help me out here !!!

THANKS
