minimum space required for basic RedHat Linux Enterprise V3 installation

Dear Sir/Madam:

I plan to install the basic Linux RedHat Enterprise V3 onto the 2GB flash hard drive. Anyone knows how much minimum space required for installing the basic Linux RedHat Enterprise V3?

I have no Linux RedHat Enterprise V3 and the PC system I ordered is not available at the moment, so I cannot try anything.

It will be very appreciated if some can help with this. If it does need more space, then I will contact the PC system provider to update my order.

Thanks and regards!
D.S.

I'm assuming you mean the WS ("Work Station") version of RHEL. Regardless, it will depend on what you choose to install. Installing every app available on the CDs will put you at around 3.5GB. Just be selective about what you choosel and I'm sure you can stay well under 2GB.

Good luck!

Hello Sir:

thanks for the reply. can you tell how much space exactly the system requires for basic RHELv3? I need to install other applications on it as well, so I need to know how much space left after installing the Linux OS.

do you mean the space required include the installaition of the X window? I don't want to install the graphic stuff.

I think it needs to be a server. we have some wireless broadband application need to install onto this system, like vocal 1.5.0, java or c++ platform, and the other application etc..

thanks and regards!
David

There is no 'basic' RHEL; there are three versions of RHEL v3.0:
AS - Advanced Server
WS - Work Station
ES - Edge Server (I think that's what it stands for)

Go here for a comparison:
http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/comparison/

So, you're ordering a new PC but it only has a 2GB flash drive? No hard drive?? Or, do you mean it only has a 2GB hard drive? Either way, something doesn't sound right. I don't think HDs smaller than 10GB have been made for 3 or 4 years now. I can't imagine running a server in a business on a little flash drive.

Honestly, I'm not sure if you can install RHEL without X. Most all the RH management tools (esp. up2date) are GUI-based and I don't think there's cmd line equivalents. This is, after all, what you're paying the $1K+ for...RHN.

If you're going to run without X, I'd suggest something Gentoo (http://www.gentoo.org) which is perfect for trimmed-down installations IMHO.

That would be good, but I think he'd rather just have an easy installation distro without the hassle. (not saying gentoo is not a good distro, tho) I would go with a distro that is Debian based--so he could use apt-get. My .2 cents.
