Is there any Alternative for tar

Hi,

Currently I am using tar to backup on DAT drive. Where as backup is concerned I have no problem while backing up, but restoration is very tedious job. Is there any software or any alternative is available, where I can explore the DAT drive & restore the file where ever I want. Pls do not talk about veritas which I can not afford

Thanks,
Suresh
