Installing RHEL off non-boot DVD using external DVD ROM

Hi All,

I want to install RHEL on my desktop using external DVD ROM. The DVD ROM is not bootable and if anyone can tell me one out of the following procedure then i can kick off my installation:

a) How to burn the DVD files on a DVD and make it bootable using Nero 6.

OR

b) I have created a linux boot floppy and after booting from it how do i mount the external dvd drive which is HP dvd300e and then how to run the linux setup from there.

Question

First thing, are you trying to do an initial install of RHEL from scratch or creating a virtual system?

If it is installing from scratch, ensure your system BIOS supports bootup with an external USB device. An install disk should be picked up by the system before any hard drive devices.

You don't say what you downloaded, and what you're burning to DVD. If you downloaded the .ISO image, look somewhere in Nero, for an option to burn an ISO image. That will burn the DVD correctly, and it will be bootable.

The (B) option in your scenario won't work, since you didn't burn the ISO image correctly to start with. The needed files/filestructure isn't there.
