Hey guys. Had RH7 for a while. few sound issues. some questions too.
Hey all.
Im running RH7 on a p166 with 64 megs ram. had no trouble installing, and now im dual booting with win95.
before installing redhat, i was using a slackware dist damnsmall.
im having trouble getting sound output from my speakers. is there some dev point i should know about?
also, i would like to know how to configure automount in order to skip having to mount hda1, floppy, cd drive, speakers (when i find out the problem), etc. could somebody give me a hand figuring out how to do so?
1. i set the background for the login sceen, and it does appear for a few seconds, until the login prompt comes up. then its just the blue background.
is this normal?
2. i set my screen saver (really cool that it comes with a matrix scrnsaver!) and unset the power saving settings, but after the set time it just goes into standby anyway.
is THIS normal? or is there some kind of problem with the screensaver?
1. If you set the background though the normal X config. files then gdm will overlay your background with it's own when it loads - have a look in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf to see if that's the problem.
2. It could be that the BIOS power management is overriding your settings - that's just a guess.
To automatically mount disks on boot you would add them into /etc/fstab. The man page for fstab makes sense only in hindsight; from memory Red Hat's documentation has a better description.
You'll need to be more specific about what problem you are having with sound output - model of sound card etc.
The disk/network share has to be there when the mount is attempted, but if you use the 'noauto' setting for a device in /etc/fstab then the system won't attempt a mount on boot up (but the device is predefined for you to use later).
I think I've seen one of these sound cards, is it an ISA ?
can you tell me the settings you used for your Yamaha in sndconfig? I have the same card but i can't get rh9 to recognize it. Keep getting error about opening /dev/audio
Hrm. This may be different, as I am using RH7, but all I had to do from the prompt is type sndconfig. It did an automatic search which failed, then asked if I wanted to select it myself. I selected my OPL and that was that...
Except I seem to have trouble with game and other audio other than the cd player... wierd.
Thanks anyway. I can run sndconfig and it does find my card but it fails during the test audio. Oh well. I thought maybe your situation could help me out.
Yeah, I haven't had much luck finding info about this issue. I think my next steps are to go through the BIOS and look for something there and then starting changing settings in the manual sndconfig to see if anything works. It's an old machine, 1995, but not that old.
I have only been using Linux for about 2 weeks now but I like it. Red Hat, im sure is the dumbed down version with all the GUI's but I'm taking a shot at the command(o) line every now and then. Wish I could get this sound card up to check out the neat mp3 and burning utilities they give you with it.
