gnome performance with vmware 4

I am new to linux so I installed RH9 as a guest system (w2k host) using VMware 4. I have tried to tune the display performance as much as possible but it is still slow (I am using vmware tools, switched to the "simple" gnome theme, etc).

What would be some good alternative desktop environments or window managers that RH9 would be happy with and that are easy to install? I was looking for something as friendly as gnome but perhaps less graphically intensive.

Any suggestions/tips would be great.

Gui performance should not be a problem under VMWare 4. I have a RH9 host and W2K guest and, once the VMWare tools are installed, the graphical performance is good.
How much memory are you allocating to the guest? How much memory is on your video card? Are you using the VMWare driver for X?

I only have ~320MB memory on the machine so I allocated the maximum recommended by VMWare to RH (~172MB). My machine is a Toshiba Portege PIII 500 mhz laptop and my video card is only 4MB and non-upgradable.

I am not sure what you mean by the vmware driver for X. After installing vmware tools I noticed that the video driver for linux was provided by vmware but I did not make any other further changes.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

No expert on VMWare X driver (don't worry, the VMWare tools installation took care of the X11 driver for you) but I suspect that 4Mb on your graphics card isn't helping things. If you've bought VMWare, why don't you direct the query to vmware themselves, or go to their support database.
