file sharing from centos 5.2 with windows xp and vista


Good Day All

Can any one please help me.

I have installed centos 5.2 to my workgroup. I then create users in centos and made the usename and passwords same as the windows machines. I then added the users to samba.
Now the tricky part comes in. I create to shared folders 1. backup and 2. test. In the sambe configuration i selected each directory to share and selected every one. (nb:because i can not see the users to select access to, It seems that there is a bug in samba) .

On my windows machines i can see the centos machine. When i click on it it asks for a user name and password which i enter. I then can see the two files shared and a printer file. When ever i select on tho shared files i get a error
"windows cannot access \\gonowsa\backup check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network, To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose" The only file that i can access is the printer one. I have tried every thing and just can come right

In your smb.conf you've got a string of

server string = gonow sa back up

Is this a typo as your previous comment suggetss the server would be called \\gonowsa ???

Hi There Sir

Yes it is called gonowsa and i have chaged it. But still have the same problem. When i select my network places in windows i see gonowsa when i doulbe click it ask for a password which i enter then i see all the shared folders. But when i select on any folder i get a error. the only folder that i can go into is printers.

And from the linux machine i can see all the windows machines and access all there shared files

Please advise and thank you in advance. this is my smb.conf file now. Do you not think that the permissions are not set right for the folders as in samba i can not select which user's to access the file as there are no users to select ( I think a bug in samba) is there maybe a way around it. Please advice i am so lost.

OK - I'm no SAMBA expert, but the user credentials now look to be stored in something called tdbsam, in my day we used smbpasswd. Are the users trying to access the share listed in tdbsam? PS>Don't ask me how to check, I've not seen tdbsam.

FOrgive me for not reading all that.

Does it work if you disable SELinux (setenforce 0)? Try it then switch SELinux back on (setenforce 1).

Also, check out your samba log files, probably in /var/log/Samba

Good Day

I have Temporarily switch off enforcement to o and would you belive it if i tell you it worked. I double clicked on the gonowsa network icon on my windows. I got prompt for a user name and password. I entered it in and i saw all the folders as before. But now when i clicked on the file i got in

Should I leave it as disabled will this cause any problem?

Once again thank you so much for the help, As for the tdbsam I am not sure how to check this.

I'd suggest you read the SELinux notes in the config file (you posted it above).

If you can't get it to work properly given the advice therein, you can use:

setsebool -P smbd_disable_trans on
