I'm configuring a new dual boot W2000 and Fedora 3, using the Windows Boot Manager. I created the bootsect.lnx and got this into the boot.ini in windows. Boots fine into the W2000 as before but when I boot to Linux, I get only:
GRUB on the screen. fdisk -l list /dev/hda1 as the boot location.
HelpBoot

you can enter the kernel image to boot into linux at the grub prompt. You should install grub to the mbr on the boot drive.


grub> kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz


type the first part and hit tab to get a list of files.


grub> kernel (hd0,0)/<tab>

when you find where the files are you need to give the bootloader all of the info needed...


grub> kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda1

grub> initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img


grub> boot

Thanks for your reply, I really want to use the option provided where the loader is on the first sector of the boot drive and not on the MBR. This will keep the Windows boot manage in control of the MBR .
Additional details are that I'm using the 64bit install kit of Fedora 3 on an AMD64 processor. I've seen this same symptom posted but I've not seen a resolution.

Looks like this is related to my SATA drive - This is defined with a RAID driver by FEDORA. There seems to be a problem with GRUB and RAID that has not been addressed. In my situation I have 1 SATA drive that has my C drive and that is what was the only drive on my system until recently I added one IDE drive where I planned to Install Linux.

I think if my first drive was the IDE and that was where the MBR was then I would not have a problem.

Is there a way to move my MBR from the SATA drive to the IDE drive?

Yes that's likely, I installed a system recently that would not boot the scsi with grub and lilo would not install. I'm not really sure of the make of controller. The system was RedHat 9. Your filesystem could easily still be on the scsi drives as long as the boot loader is on the ide drive. That could be your windows drive and you would be okay. You will still be able to boot Windows. Basically if your BIOS can be setup to boot the ide then there is not really any need to install linux there only the bootloader to the mbr on the boot drive.


You need only one bootloader on the mbr that can boot any system. You should not need a bootloader for each system.

With scsi the device is sda as instead of hda.


I would make a grub boot floppy and test it out. You could also use a flash disk if you have one and your bios supports it.

Using the option to switch the order of my drives (IDE and SATA), I was able to place GRUB on the MBR but it did not correctly detect any other operating system. I guess there myst be a way to edit the GRUB.CONF file and specify another operating system.

Grub has to be told where to boot, if you get a grub prompt you can try the method above. Once you get into the linux system you can install grub to the mbr from there with the correct config file so that the menu has all of your settings. The file is /boot/grub/menu.lst.
