I just installed fedora core 4 dvd iso on a 30gig partition I have on a spare storage hard drive. When it trys to boot to that hard drive, the word GRUB comes up after the usual post stuff and it just sits there. Not only that, but I partitioned the rest of that hard drive off as a vfat so I can share files between my XP install and linux. But windows doesn't recognize it as a read-able partition. I've installed fedora core 4 times now trying to get it to work and it still won't. I'm running an asus nforce4 sli deluxe on an athlon64 3500+. I'm also installing the x86_64 version if that makes any difference. The hard drives are both SATA and linux refers to them as sda and sdb respectively (linux is on sdb). Any help please!!
Your question is a bit vague. How about you post the contents of /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/grub.conf (or menu.lst, if that's what your distro uses). That would be a great help.
Without knowing the contents of fstab, and the contents of grub.conf, it's really difficult to diagnose the problem.
It seems that you have grub written to the MBR, but what happens after that part is activated is the mystery that begs to be solved.

About:
GRUB for DOS is a build of the GNU GRUB boot manager for DOS, and can be run under real mode DOS. It also has many new features. For example, it can be booted through BOOT.INI of Windows (grldr) and kexec of Linux (grub4lin). The disk emulation feature is another enhancement over GNU GRUB, and can be used to run legacy DOS/Windows9x systems with floppy or hard disk images.
try using the rescue cd that comes with FC4. it automatically finds ur install at someplace. then u can 'chroot' to it (if u dont know what that means, u will by the time u put in the cd). then goto /boot/grub an get ur grub.conf and goto /etc and get the fstab file. then maybe these guys can help u out.
i dunno about the dvd, but maybe if u dont have rescue cd, typing 'linux rescue' and hitting enter might work with the dvd.
